One time I had the opportunity to interview someone who is an expert with humor.  But the more I dug deeper into his secrets, the more I rediscover the things I already learned through experience:
  • it is important to make people laugh to establish connection during your delivery
  • humor is a skill developed; it is not an inborn talent
  • humor takes a lot of practice and mistakes
  • create a surprise; never hint that a punchline is coming
  • one learns by observing comedians and reading literatures
  • timing is very, very important
  • never give away clues when your delivery was a dud

Aside from connecting, humor brings the energy up and sustains the audience's attention span. It is a great asset to bring along in your talks.
