One time I had the opportunity to interview someone who is an expert with humor. But the more I dug deeper into his secrets, the more I rediscover the things I already learned through experience:
- it is important to make people laugh to establish connection during your delivery
- humor is a skill developed; it is not an inborn talent
- humor takes a lot of practice and mistakes
- create a surprise; never hint that a punchline is coming
- one learns by observing comedians and reading literatures
- timing is very, very important
- never give away clues when your delivery was a dud
Aside from connecting, humor brings the energy up and sustains the audience's attention span. It is a great asset to bring along in your talks.
